How to interpret province matric rankings

Province rankings are a useful starting point, but they work best when you read them as a summary of a very large and diverse education system. A province includes many districts, and districts include many schools with different contexts. That means a single pass rate can hide important detail: cohort size, subject mix, and how evenly performance is distributed across the province.

A good way to use this page is to answer three separate questions. First: what is the current level? Select a specific year to see how provinces performed in that exam year. Second: how stable is the performance? Switch to “All Years (Average)” to reduce noise and see the typical outcome over time. Third: what is the direction? Use the trends to see whether a province is improving, staying flat, or fluctuating.

Always read pass rate together with Total Wrote and Total Achieved. Large cohorts tend to move gradually, while smaller cohorts can swing more. A small change in pass rate for a large province can represent many learners, so even “small” percentage changes can be meaningful. Conversely, a large percentage jump can sometimes reflect a smaller shift in absolute numbers.

Finally, remember that rankings are relative: your province can improve and still move down the table if others improved more. If you want an actionable view, use this page to identify provinces to investigate further, then drill into districts and schools to find where gains are concentrated and where additional support could have the biggest impact.
