How to use district rankings for real insight

District rankings are most valuable when you treat them as a “where to look next” tool, not a final judgment. Districts can differ widely in the number of schools they manage, the size of matric cohorts, the mix of rural and urban communities, and the resources available to learners. Two districts may have the same pass rate but very different realities beneath the surface.

Start by choosing your comparison frame. If you want a fairer operational comparison, filter within a province first. This keeps policy context and administration more consistent. If you want a national scan, leave the province blank, but expect more variation driven by geography and socio‑economic conditions.

Next, decide whether you care more about the latest year or stability over time. A single year can be affected by cohort composition, local disruptions, or program changes. The “All Years (Average)” view reduces volatility and can better represent typical performance. Once you’ve identified a district of interest, switch back to a specific year to understand recent movement.

Finally, always read the pass rate alongside Schools, Total Wrote, and Total Achieved. A district with a small cohort can jump up and down the table with a relatively small change in learner outcomes. A district with a large cohort can move slowly but still represent a major difference in the number of learners passing. Use this page to identify consistent top performers, improving districts, and outliers worth investigating—then drill down to school‑level results for practical, local explanations.
