How to compare schools fairly

Side‑by‑side comparisons are powerful, but they can also create misleading conclusions if you compare schools that operate in very different contexts. Use this tool as a structured way to ask better questions: are two schools similar in cohort size, district environment, and quintile context? Do they show consistent performance over time, or do they swing from year to year?

Start with the filters (province, district, and school name). If you are doing a “like‑for‑like” comparison, keep both schools in a similar province/district context where possible. Quintile context matters too: a Quintile 1–3 school and a Quintile 4–5 school may face very different constraints and opportunities. A fairer comparison often uses peers within similar context, then highlights outliers that perform unusually well relative to those peers.

Next, interpret the trend, not only the headline pass rate. A single year can be unusually high or low for many reasons. Multi‑year trends help you see whether outcomes are stable. If one school’s results fluctuate sharply, that can be a sign of small cohort effects or inconsistent performance. If a school is steadily improving, it can be a sign that interventions and teaching routines are compounding.

Finally, read percentages alongside scale. If one school has far fewer candidates, a small change in the number of learners passing can move the pass rate substantially. For larger cohorts, pass rate changes may be smaller but can represent many learner outcomes. Use the comparison as a navigation tool: it helps you choose what to investigate next (leadership stability, learner support, subject strengths), rather than as a definitive ranking of “best” and “worst.”
