How to read school performance data

School rankings are a helpful shortcut, but the most accurate picture comes from reading the numbers with context. This page is designed to let you explore results responsibly: use filters to compare similar schools, use multi‑year averages to reduce noise, and use district/province context to understand what “good performance” looks like in a particular environment.

Start with the filters. If you are comparing schools for a decision (like choosing a school or identifying strong peer examples), filter by province and district first. Schools operate under different local conditions, and within‑district comparisons are often more meaningful than national comparisons. Quintile filters add socio‑economic context; compare within similar quintiles when you want a fairer view of performance relative to constraints.

Next, choose the right time horizon. A specific year is useful for “what happened this year?” but it can be volatile, especially for smaller cohorts. The “All Years (Average)” view helps you see the typical performance over time. Once you find a school of interest, drill into its history to see whether the school is consistently strong, improving, or fluctuating. Consistency often indicates stable routines, learner support, and effective teaching time.

Finally, read pass rate together with the size of the cohort (how many wrote) and the absolute number who achieved passes. Percentages can be misleading without scale: a small school can swing quickly in rank with only a few learners, while a large school may move slowly but represent many learner outcomes. Use the table as a navigation tool, then use trends and context to draw conclusions you can trust.
